The great progress in prevention of blindness in China has been reached since the beginning of the new century. However, some urgent problems exist, including low cataract surgical rate, lack of authoritative leadership and national plan, less priority to the prevention of blindness in the development of ophthalmology in China. It is the social responsibility for Chinese ophthalmologists to further intensify the activities for prevention of blindness. We should follow the tradition that our society pay more attention to the prevention of blindness, analyze the current situation, and seriously solve the existed problems. Elimination of cataract blindness is the first important task in the prevention of blindness in China. The goal of the high volume, superior quality and low cost in treatment of cataract blindness should be realized soon LA: Chinese
