Relationship of disk area and RNFL thickness in patients with large cup

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between disk area and retinal nerve fibril layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with large cup. METHODS: Thirty-nine persons (60 eyes) whose C/D area ratios were from 0.36 to 0.75 were chosen into this study. According to the disk area, these patients were divided into two groups: small disk area group (less than 2.8 mm2 ) and large disk area group (more than 2.8 mm2 ). The optic nerve head disk area, C/D area ratio and the thickness of RNFL around the optic disk were evaluated by optical coherent tomography (OCT). RESULTS: In small disk area group, disk area and C/D area ratio was 2.38 ± 0.29 mm2 and 0.50 ± 0.13 respectively, and the thickness of RNFL was 87.73 ± 18.59 μm. In large disk area group, disk area, C/D area ratio and the thickness of RNFL was 3.26 ± 0.36 mm2 , 0.58 ± 0.10 and 100.67 ± 18.56 μm respectively. The thickness of RNFL in large disk area group had a 14.75% increase compared with small disk area group. Statistical difference was found between two groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Disk area is one of the major factors to reflect RNFL thickness in patients with large cup. The normal larger disc area associate with the thickening of RNFL. LA: Chinese
