In this letter to the editor the corresponding author comments on an important paper which asked the question: should diabetic patients be screened for glaucoma? The corresponding author points out that the original authors have missed an important paper which published in April 1997. This paper which resulted from the Blue Mountains Eye Study presented a positive association of open angle glaucoma with diabetes. The original authors agree with the omission. They still feel that diabetic patients should not be screened for glaucoma. They feel however that the mentioned paper has convincing support for the existence of an association between diabetes and primary open angle glaucoma. Thus it seems that we, ophthalmologists, have to be aware of the increased risk of primary open angle glaucoma in this group of patients who attend for retinopathy screening.
