This editorial deals with the present hype on so-called non-perforating surgery. The author starts with the fairy-tales of science and the long results of time. He stresses that every new procedure requires quite strict criteria to substantiate the pros and cons convincingly. He wants to know whether there has been a randomized comparitive, prospective, case-control, clinical trial comparing the study with trabeculectomies. He wants suitable criteria for success. He wants to know what the mechanism of action is. What is the risk profile? And finally is it easy or difficult to perform and does it require special technology? The point made by the editor is that at the moment we do not have sufficient data at our disposal to pass a judgement on the value of non-perforating filtering surgery. There is still work to be done.
