Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death is the end result of practically all diseases of the optic nerve, including glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Understanding the factors determining the susceptibility of the retina or the optic nerve to glaucomatous damage, and the means to prevent it, requires good animal models. The authors review the different current models in rodents that have been used to study RGC damage, and discuss their value and adequacy as models for human glaucoma.
