Early detection of glaucoma was attempted in 14,611 patients seen at an eye clinic during a one-year period. The series comprised 5216 males and 9395 females. Their ages ranged from 12-68 years; average, 26.2 years. Initial screening was done by intraocular pressure, refraction, family history, and fundscopic appearance of the disc. The patients then underwent perimetry by FDT screener (Humphrey). A total of 150 persons (1.1%) were categorized as glaucoma suspects. After detailed examinations, 17 of 14,000 persons (0.12%) under 40 years of age were diagnosed with glaucoma. The group comprised five males and 12 females. There were 14 cases of normal-tension glaucoma and three of primary open-angle glaucoma. FDT screener was useful in detecting asymptomatic glaucoma in younger adults. LA: Japanese
