The authors followed up 26 eyes of 13 patients of normal-tension glaucoma. The patients were aged from 42-65 years, average 57.5 years, at the start of follow-up. The duration of follow-up averaged 11.7 years. The visual field was evaluated using an Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer. The visual field was judged as progressed when the mean deviation and/or corrected pattern standard deviation increased by 3 dB or more from the initial value. Of the 26 eyes, the visual field defect progressed in 13 eyes of nine cases. The visual acuity remained intact in 23 eyes during the follow-up. There was no difference in the progression of visual field defect between younger and older age groups. There was a tendency for advanced visual field defect to progress further, suggesting the need for a careful follow-up on case-to-case basis. The present findings show that deterioration of visual field in normal-tension glaucoma is much more gradual than hitherto reported.
