A retrospective study of combined phacoemulsification cataract extraction with intraocular lens implant and trabeculectomy was carried out in 35 eyes of black patients who had coexisting cataracts and glaucoma. The patients were followed closely at 1 day, 1 week, 4-6 weeks, and 2-20 months postoperatively. The results are comparable to previous studies done on ethnically mixed and white populations, indicating that the combined procedure is a safe and effective therapeutic modality.
