The authors investigated the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) following instillation of Mydrin™ which contains 0.5% tropicamide and 5% phenilephrine. The tested eyes comprised open-angle glaucoma 40 eyes, capsular glucoma 16 eyes, normal-tension glaucoma 35 eyes, and 434 eyes without glaucoma. One hour after two instillations of mydriatics with an interval of five minutes, the IOP rose by an average of 2.6 ± 2.7 mmHg in POAG, 2.7 ± 2.0 mmHg in capsular glaucoma, and 0.1 ± 1.5 mmHg in eyes without glaucoma. The IOP elevation was significant in open-angle and capsular glaucoma (p < 0.0001 each, Student's t test). Four glaucoma eyes (35%) and six capsular glaucoma eyes showed IOP elevation by 4 mmHg or greater. These findings show that due precaution is necessary in attempting mydriasis in open-angle or capsular glaucoma eyes. LA: Japanese
