This study concerning intraocular pressure (IOP) in 1981 workers living in Martinique is similar to that conducted on 1276 workers in Castres, France, some years ago. The study confirms that there is a very high prevalence of high IOP even amongst the younger population and it is therefore very much in the interests of doctors working in occupational health to diagnose this ocular disease in order to enable better preservation of the workers visual capacity. Literature data suggest a higher prevalence of this disease within the mixed race population. These studies prove that this is not the case and show that, even taking into account age, sex, and tobacco addiction, the mixed race population has a lower tendency towards this disease than the metropolitan population. This result leads the authors to disagree with the widespread notion that the highest prevalence of glaucoma is to be found within the coloured population. LA: French
