Top-Ten Latin American Glaucoma Society Meeting
February 10, 2002, Aruba
Daniel Grigera
A relaxed, high-spirited LAGS meeting took place in beautiful Aruba.
Eighteen papers were presented. Special foreign guests, Robert Feldman,
Erik Greve, Clive Migdal, and Paul Palmberg moderated at some of the sessions.
Robert Weinreb delivered the LAGS Conference this year. He lectured on "Reflections
from the nerve fiber layer". During the Meeting, Bob was elected Honorary
Member of LAGS.
Aruba's Top-Ten were:
-
A family with open-angle glaucoma cosegregating with markers from
2cen-q13, location of the glaucoma region (locus) GLC1B, has been identified
in Peru.
- Type-C natriuretic peptide (CNP) concentration in rabbit aqueous
humor does not have important fluctuation over circadian time.
- Nerve fiber layer measurements with the GDx may be influenced by
drugs affecting pupillary diameter and ciliary muscle tone, but not
by the status of room light.
- The ability of the GDx to detect localized NFL defects is better
when using sector analysis or a combination of Fourier's coefficients
than when using the parameters provided by the device's software.
- UBM findings in Sturge-Weber syndrome: intrascleral vessels and
ciliary body angioma are common to glaucomatous and non-glaucomatous
eyes. On the other hand, small supraciliary effusions are only seen,
and are frequently seen (in around 90% of cases), in eyes with glaucoma.
- Extensive trabecular impregnation in silicone oil-filled eyes, as
detected by UBM, is related to a higher extent to the long-standing
presence of the substance than to the number of emulsified silicone
oil particles in the anterior chamber.
- Bimatoprost provides a slightly stronger IOP reduction than travoprost.
Redness appears more frequently with travoprost than with bimatoprost.
- In an experimental model of perfusion of Baerveldt implants in rabbits,
an inverse correlation was found between perfusion and capsule thickness.
- Small incision trabeculectomy avoiding Tenon's capsule is safe and
effective for achieving an IOP of < 16 mmHg at two years.
- The use of tenonectomy and mitomycin C 1 mg/ml as adjuncts to the
implantation of a special high-pressure Ahmed valve in neovascular glaucoma
tends to reduce the hypertensive phase of the postoperative period (multicenter
comparative study).
