Clinical effect of glaucoma valve implantation for clinical challenging refractory glaucoma

AIM: To analyze the clinical effect and complications of Ahmed glaucoma valve multipathway compound implantation to further investigations for clinically challenging refractory glaucoma. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on the charts of 31eyes of 31 patients with refractory glaucoma treated with Ahmed glaucoma valve implant placement via posterior chamber (16 eyes) and ciliarotomy combined vitrectomy (15 eyes). RESULTS: The mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) (12.8054 mmHg) was significantly lower than the mean preoperative IOP (47.30.45 mmHg) at last follow up (mean 8.6 months; range 6-12 months) (P < 0.01, t-test). Overall, there were 23 eyes (74%) classified as complete successes, 5 eyes (16%) qualified successes, and 3 eyes failed (10%). Eight eyes had improvement of visual acuity, in which 1 eye imported to 0.4. Twenty eyes had maintained of visual acuity. CONCLUSION: Ahmed glaucoma valve multipathway implantation is an effective and relatively safe therapy for the treatment of refractory glaucoma, and provide good control of IOP with low incidence of complications.
