Glaucoma update: what physicians and the public need to know

With the aging population in Singapore, glaucoma will be more prevalent. The majority of glaucomas are silent and typically present late with advanced damage. A large proportion of glaucomas remains undetected. Screening for glaucoma is the only way to detect glaucoma early and high-risk groups should be screened. Early detection is important in preventing blindness as treatment is more difficult and less effective in the advanced stages of glaucoma. Greater awareness amongst physicians and the public is vital in the prevention of glaucoma blindness.
