OBJECTIVE: Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in worldwide. To enhance the education of prevention and treatment of glaucoma is very important for improving the awareness ability for glaucoma in target population. Present paper was a survey to determine the glaucoma awareness in a population visiting a general eye clinic. METHODS: A questionnaire about glaucoma was designed and administrated in general eye clinic patients ( n = 646). Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the influence of demographic and clinical features on awareness of glaucoma. RESULTS: The patients with glaucoma unawareness overall were identified in 66. 6% of the total population, and 51. 61% of them was the patients with suffering from glaucom. There were no significant differences were found in glaucoma awareness between male and female, with and without steroid, with and without systemic hypertension, with and without diabetes, with and without myopia ( P > 0. 05 ). However, obvious differences were seen in glaucoma awareness among different ages, education backgrounds, specialties in the health field ,with and without regular ocular examination, with and without the history of dilated pupils, with and without family history of glaucoma( P < 0. 05). The glaucoma awareness ability was enhanced in the population with cardiovascular disease and administration of medication for high blood pressure. The positive correlation was indicated between glaucoma awareness ability and the factors mentioned above. CONCLUSION: This outcome implies that the population with myopia, usage of steroid, systemic hypertension ,diabetes, lower education background ,less eye care ,and even small amount of glaucoma patients are more likely to be unfamiliar with glaucoma knowledge,so they will be the target population for social education in glaucoma awareness ability. The regular eye examination, society, information exchange are necessary for glaucoma patients. LA: Chinese
