The m-ERG change in early-stage primary open-angle glaucoma

AIM: To assess the early-stage primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) applying with the m-ERG first order kernel (FOK) and the second order kernel (SOK). METHODS: We used the multi-focal electrophysiological examination system (RETIscan 3.15 version) and the Humphrey 750 computer visual field analysis appliance. We examined 38 normal-subject-eyes and selected 42 eyes of early-stage primary open-angle glaucoma. Four parameters of P1 and N1 wave of the amplitude and latency of FOK and SOK were recorded. The SPSS10.0 software of statistics analyzed the primary data. RESULTS: In FOK, the amplitude of P1-wave and N1-wave, the latency of P1-wave and N1-wave in four quadrants were not significantly different between the early-stage glaucoma groups and normal collative group (P > 0.05), as well as in sum reaction (P > 0.05). In the early-stage glaucoma groups, the normal difference between nasal and temporal was disappeared in FOK. The early-stage glaucoma groups, in SOK, the amplitude of P1-wave remarkably decreased (P < 0.05), N1-wave slightly decreased (P < 0.05), the latency of P1-wave and N1-wave remarkably prolonged (P < 0.05). In superior-nasal, interior-nasal, superior-temporal, interior-temporal quadrantal, as well as in sum reaction (P < 0.05). The results of m-ERG were not consistent with the visual field in the early-stage glaucoma groups. CONCLUSION: m-ERG is a sensitive method in examining glaucoma, and it can be used as an evidence in diagnosis of early-stage POAG. LA: Chinese
