A birth order effect study on primary-angle closure glaucoma

PURPOSE: To analyze the birth order effect of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) patients and to discuss the association of PACG with environmental risk factors as well as with geneticones. METHODS: A birth order effect study was conducted based on the methods of Greenwood-Yule and Haldane-Smith for 200 probands and 18 affected siblings from 200 pedigrees collected at Eye and Ent Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. RESULTS: Findings of birth order study by Greenwood-Yule suggested that there was a tendency for cases of PACG to concentrate at earlier birth orders of 1-3, and another result by Haldane-Smith showed that difference between observed value ( σ 6Aobserved = 3 306) and expected value( σ 6Aexpected = 3 610) of 6A was greater than two standard deviations (S = 121. 91). The two different analysis both proved that individuals in Chinese population have a tendency for the case of PACG to occur at earlier birth orders. CONCLUSIONS: individuals at earlier birth orders were at a higher risk of suffering from PACG. There was an evident association of PACG with birth order. LA: Chinese
