PURPOSE: The purpose of the research was to study the variation of intraocular pressure (IOP) in leprosy. METHODS: This work involved 575 leprosy out-patients of both sexes, with different clinical forms of the disease, and ages varying from four to 89 years (mean, 40.97 years), from nine different regions of high leprosy prevalence in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation (p < 0.05) between pressure above 21mmHg and goniosynechiae and reactional states of the disease. There was also an association between high IOP and narrow chamber angle and the lepromatous type of the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the literature, the authors discuss their results and conclude that iridocyclitis is the major factor leading to changes in the angle that increase IOP. This suggests that leprosy patients with high IOP are more likely to develop glaucoma than ocular hypertensive individuals in the population as a whole.LA: Portuguese
